The mayor of london | #Londonisopen

As Brexit dawns, how do you ensure the world knows #LondonIsOpen for everyone?

What would our city be, if it were not for the melting pot of cultures, accents and colours it embraces? We needed to reassure Londoners that despite Brexit, London is a global city. #LondonIsOpen was a social and above-the-line campaign that rallied Londoners together with its positive, impactful and straightforward message.

I conceptualised and directed several films for this campaign based on the idea that by celebrating our city’s culture - the European restaurants, the religious festivals, the global businesses and multiculturalisms that make London, London - we would inspire a sense of pride and inclusivity amongst fellow British, European and Global Londoners.

#LondonIsOpen is widely acknowledged as the most successful public-facing campaign by a British politician, and was awarded ‘Best Use Of Video’ at the UK Public Sector Communications Awards in 2017. The films have collectively received 10s of millions of views across social media, OOH, TV and the odd Catch Up spot.

Vinyls were placed on the floor outside different London landmarks to reiterate the message. E.g. “London is Historic” sat below the statues in Parliament Square.

Members of the public including celebrities posed around London with “#LondonIsOpen” signs, and helped spread the message across their own social media channels.
